We are delighted to welcome featured artist Nicole Emmons. Nicole is a Northeast Connecticut–based artist whose work lives at the intersection of movement, psychology, and presence. Her latest collection, Land Bound, explores the delicate balance between darkness and light—inviting viewers into immersive worlds designed to be felt as much as seen.
Each piece acts as a quiet portal, encouraging stillness, reflection, and a gentle unraveling of the nervous system. Through layered textures and fluid compositions, Nicole creates spaces where the mind can soften and the body can recalibrate—offering a sense of calm, balance, and return.
Wearing many hats as a gymnastics coach, yoga teacher, and teacher of yoga teachers, Nicole’s artistic voice is deeply informed by her lived experience in the body. As a nervous system regulation practitioner with academic foundations in psychology, mental health, and child development, her work bridges science and sensation—translating internal states into visual form.
Rooted in movement and guided by awareness, Nicole’s creations embody flow, inviting viewers to lose themselves, let go, just be and breathe and in doing so, find a deeper sense of equilibrium.
Come discover her work at the bookstore during June’s First Friday Art Crawl - Friday, June 5th from 5-8PM. We look forward to seeing you!

The UNITED and Mystic Aquarium present Sea & Studio, a one-of-a-kind gallery showcase that brings together six local artists with animal counterparts to reflect a belief shared by both institutions: creativity is not uniquely human.
For this collaboration, artists Josh Behan, Katie Fogg, John Tedeschi, Regina Linke, Elizabeth Ellenwood, and Westerly High junior Lillyana Isbell each visited Mystic Aquarium to experience the creative enrichment programs used with the aquarium's resident belugas, California sea lions, harbor seals, cow nose rays, and African penguins. Their encounters form the heart of this exhibition. Original pieces from each artist will be displayed alongside paintings made by the animals themselves, accompanied by video and information on each pairing, each artist, and the enrichment programs that made it possible.
An OPENING reception will be held on Friday, June 5th from 6-8pm.
At Mystic Aquarium, activities like animal painting are used as enrichment tools that promote stimulation, engagement, and well-being. At the UNITED, we see every day how the arts invite curiosity, learning, and connection. Sea & Studio brings these two worlds together.
The show will be on display from Friday, June 5th through the end of August. The opening evening on June 5th will include a public gallery reception from 6-8pm which will also feature a presentation by Jesse Ciletti, Senior Trainer of Cetaceans at Mystic Aquarium, titled Training Imitation of Novel Sounds in a Beluga Whale. Jesse will share the remarkable story of Juno, Mystic's male beluga whale, whose spontaneous mimicry of environmental sounds led to a training process designed to encourage vocal imitation on cue. The work offers a window into the cognitive depth and extraordinary vocal abilities of beluga whales, and speaks to the broader ways enrichment activities at Mystic Aquarium support animal wellbeing while deepening public understanding of marine life and conservation.

Hoxie Gallery at Westerly Library
June Exhibition | Presentation & Demo of BiblioQuilts with Larry Clifford: "Off the Shelf"
This month's exhibit will feature works by Maine artist, Larry Clifford! Head to the Hoxie Gallery from 1-3 pm Saturday, May 30th for a presentation and demo with the artist. Works can be viewed in the Hoxie Gallery from Saturday, May 30th-Thursday, June 25th during library hours.
About the artist:
"My BiblioQuilts and murals are created using distressed books that were salvaged from basements, attics, and public libraries throughout Maine. I repurpose every part of the books I find —the covers, the pages, the spines—breathing new life into my materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. Postcards, maps, and other ephemera may be tempting, but I restrict my palette to neglected books. That’s what makes the work both challenging and unique.
Quilts made from recycled cloth are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a whole new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” that were meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged hardcovers – books that no one has read or paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the landfill. I carry an inventory of pre-made BiblioQuilts, and I collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces and murals. My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone involved.
After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University, then an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media like pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. I then switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the nonprofit sector – mostly because I didn’t want to create artwork on a computer. (What can I say…I’m old school.) At this stage of my career, I’m thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine crafts. -
